The Map that came to Life
Item posted: Sunday 8th March , 2009 I was recalling the other day, whilst walking on a lane bathed in early spring sunshine, a book which my parents must have given me when I was very young, probably no more than 10, with the above title. It must have been my first exposure to the delights of map reading and as I recall told the story of some youngsters who having studied a map had gone out into the countryside to experience it for real. Anyway it awakened in me what has been a lifelong fascination with maps of all kinds. Road Maps, Contour Maps, Political Maps, Old Maps, New Maps… all are unendingly interesting. No matter how often or for how long you study them you can always spot something that you didn’t notice before. And of course when you are out on the moors in a thick fog with only the map and compass to guide you your love of them knows no bounds.
